Phonics Intervention Programme:

Intent The Phonics Intervention Programme aims to enhance the reading skills of students who are below their expected reading age. The programme specifically targets students with a reading age of:
  • 12 months or more below their chronological age for one-to-one intervention, 
  • 6 months or more below for small group intervention, 
  • all other students through in-class intervention. 
 

The primary goal is to ensure that all students develop strong phonics knowledge and skills crucial for reading proficiency.

Implementation

The programme is structured around a series of well-defined actions:
  1. Assessment and Identification:
    • Initial assessments using Twinkl’s phonics screening checklists and baseline assessments.
    •  Regular teacher observations during phonics lessons.
    • Gathering parental input on reading habits and difficulties.
     
  2. Setting Goals:
    • Creating individual learning plans with specific phonemes, graphemes, and high-   frequency words.
    • Establishing short-term and long-term goals for each student.
     
  3. Planning the Intervention:
    • Selecting appropriate Twinkl Phonics Intervention Packs.
    • Scheduling consistent intervention sessions.
    • Deciding on one-on-one or small group interventions based on student needs.
     
  4. Implementation of Lessons:
    • Delivering structured lessons using Twinkl Phonics Intervention Packs.
    • Incorporating multisensory approaches, such as actions, songs, and mnemonics.
    • Including both reading and writing activities in each session.
     
  5. Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Conducting regular formative assessments.
    • Tracking progress and adjusting the intervention plan as needed.
     
  6. Communication with Stakeholders:
    •  Providing regular progress reports to parents.
    • Offering suggestions for parental involvement at home.
    • Collaborating with other teachers and support staff.
     
  7. Review and Reflect:
    • Conducting final assessments to measure overall progress.
    • Reflecting on the successes and challenges of the programme.
    • Making recommendations for future interventions.
